How to… request an item IF the item you want is not listed in the SWAN catalog

With an Matteson Public Library card, you have access to books and other materials from most public and university libraries throughout Illinois , and from many libraries throughout the United States , even worldwide. There is a $3 charge per item for items borrowed from out-of-state libraries.

The easiest, and perhaps quickest, way to retrieve items from libraries outside of SWAN is to contact the Matteson Public Library and let our librarians do the work for you.

Call us at (708) 748-4431and ask for the Adult Services Department. Please have your MPL card ready. OR
Contact us through Ask a Librarian or if you have a specific item in mind use our request form.

If you wish to drive to another library and check out the item yourself, here is a list of public libraries in the Metropolitan Public Library System. (http://swan.mls.lib.il.us/screens/libinfo.html)
Make sure your library card is in good standing (no outstanding fines over $5 and not expired). Your library card can be used to check out books (and many other materials as well) at all of these libraries. You may return the item to the Matteson Public Library, and we will send the item back to the owning library for you. Always call ahead and ask for materials to be set aside before driving to another library.

FirstSearch national, (limited worldwide) catalog
You will need a username and password to access FirstSearch from home. There are three ways to get this information.

Call the reference desk (708-748-4431 ext.12) during business hours. You will need to have your valid Matteson Public Library card number ready to give to the librarians.
Come in to the Matteson Public Library and go to the Adult Services Reference Desk. You will need to have your valid Matteson Public Library card with you.
