Special NeedsThe Matteson Public Library makes every reasonable effort to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The library provides special technology, services, materials and equipment for patrons with vision impairments and other special needs. AccessibilityHandicapped parking spaces for properly identified vehicles are available. A ramp is located near the south end of the parking lot. Automatic doors assist in entering the building where both floors are wheelchair friendly and accessible using the elevator located next to the administrative office. Handicapped restrooms are also available on both floors. MaterialsThe library has a collection of audio books on cassette or compact disc, as well as large print materials. The Talking Book program, a free service offered through the Heart of Illinois Talking Book Center, enables individuals to receive equipment and audio books at home. The Center also maintains a telephone dial-up system that offers daily newspapers read over the phone. The library also carries a collection of described DVD's for the visually impaired. If you are a Matteson resident who is homebound or residing in the Applewood Living Center, you are eligible to receive free library delivery service. Assistive TechnologyPatrons who have a hearing or speech impairment and have access to a TDD can call the library’s TDD machine at 708-748-4431, or if they are in the library and need to call out, just ask staff at the front desk for assistance. The library has an Optelec ClearView Desktop Electronic Magnifier which magnifies anything under the viewfinder from 2 to over 50 times its original size. Patrons who require special accommodations for a disability are asked to call the library 48 hours in advance of an event at (708) 748-4431. |
