HISTORY

Three compact pages pack in all of the major details young students will want about the life of Jonathan Chapman, the real larger-than-life hero whose mission was to plant apple trees across the nation.

Information and activities presented on this site honoring the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in the United States.  The site offers printable coloring pages, a reading list, plenty of cultural details, and a fun adventure game that lets viewers make decisions as Captain of the Jamestown Colony.

Test Ice Age survival skills while visiting Creswell Crags, a British limestone gorge with evidence of life during the Pleistocene era. Descriptions of food gathering, hunting skills, domestication of dogs, and living conditions abound.

How did our alphabet come into existence? This site tackles that question by providing lesson plans for grades K-2. The information is presented in a way to interest older students as well. The four lessons cover the Phoenicians and the beginning of the alphabet, the Greek alphabet, and the Roman alphabet. The lessons are designed to teach students about the Phoenician, Greek, and Roman cultures as well as how our alphabet evolved.

At this site, "modern" means that time when America was introduced to new technology (think electric lights and automobiles), from 1880 to 1920. Sharpen observation skills as you decipher clues in photographs & interpret history.

COMMUNITY

Created by an organization for city planners, this site has information about the profession and activities to help students learn more about their communities. "Crazy City Stories" lets you complete tales such as "How the Town of Meatball Springs Got Its Name," which you can then e-mail. In the "City Gallery," share a picture and description of a "great place" or a "lousy place" in your town. "Word Town" helps you write and post cinquains about your town, & "Scavenger Hunt Scrapbook" suggests items to look for in your community.

Plenty of material on communities here. There are several printable books, including two about firefighters and one about community helpers that has puzzles, a connect-the-dots game, and a word search. You'll also find creative craft ideas. Worksheets emphasizing skills such as alphabetizing and a printable vehicle calendar are also included.

Children will discover how assimilation and tolerance help create a multicultural society full of acceptance. Read stories from various cultures, discover what our language would be like without the richness of foreign words, and create a personalized story where the main character makes a new friend.

GEOGRAPHY

Enchanted Learning offers a very simplistic look at Ireland for young students who need only the basic facts. A colorful map takes up most of the page, with major cities highlighted. A small insert shows Ireland's location in Western Europe, and finding cities, mountains, & the capital is an easy task. Facts covered include the country's location, official languages, population, climate, some geography, & the flag. Links to coloring pages, flag facts, & Irish holiday crafts make this a good starting place for young students.

The second-largest continent is spotlighted at this colorful kids' site. One nation a month is showcased with a brief historical time line, a map, and snappy one-sentence highlights on the people and the geography. A good prelude to more comprehensive study.

  • GeoNet  Houghton Mifflin Social Studies  Gr 3-7

Multiple-choice questions and a globe-trotting beaver guide students through information about the 50 states and the world. This challenging game offers two levels of competition and provides facts about places and peoples, spatial terms, physical systems, population, environment, and time.

RELIGION

Clear, in-depth descriptions of the major religions of the world are presented here with information on doctrines, history, and practices. A quick-facts link offers a less text-heavy version for younger students. A pie chart of U.S. religions is included.
